Tips For Finding A Good Roommate

Searching for the ideal roommate remains a challenge till these days. Having found one is certainly fortunate for the few. Here are some tips that would assist you in becoming an ideal roommate and choosing one.

Rule 1. No sharing of bedroom. You can share the apartment, but not your bedrooms. Unless you really need to share, do not make it a policy that any of you can share a room. This will assure that each one of you will have your own personal space.

Having your own room is one big advantage of living in an apartment versus living in a dorm. An apartment will guarantee you more personal space. If you are willing to take in a roommate of the opposite sex, then having more than one bathroom can be a must.

Another thing to take into account is the number of roommates you want to share the apartment with. The more people sharing the rent, the lesser you have to pay. But then, the lesser personal space you also have.

Living with more than one person can actually be fun, especially if you all get along together. Still, you might end up having issues with their friends who come and visit. So think about that.

When you select a roommate, it might be important to know their sleeping habits. If they end up working while you need to sleep and their work is noisy, this can be a nightmare on your part, or theirs, if the opposite is true. Having schedules that coordinate and work well together could mean a successful roommate to roommate relationship.

Tidiness is another issue. Is your future roommate clean and tidy or is he or she prone to making a mess (and not cleaning it up)? Be careful about messy people, they will get on your nerves on a daily, if not, hourly basis. How about their noise level? Do they blast loud music all day long? Then there is the ever important policy on girlfriends or boyfriends. What do both of you agree on?

These are the basic issues that you might want to think about before posting a ‘wanted roommate’ sign on your local bulletin board. More serious issues would be whether they are decent, honest, reliable (in terms of rental payment), and you definitely don’t want to live with someone doing anything illegal.
